Johns Creek Ace corne rs the market on celestial event

Gamble pays off, with sale of 10,000 pairs of viewing glasses

Another customer breathes a sigh of relief as he clutches his “sun” glasses.
Smiles break out as patient solarists near the end of their wait.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Lukowiak family, owners of Johns Creek Ace Hardware Store on Jones Bridge Road, has been known to take a flier based on the weather. During a recent blizzard the Lukowiaks’ took a chance and stocked up on sleds and became Toboggan Central.

“Yeah, we’ve taken gambles before. We’ve gone in on sleds, on ice-melt. So it wasn’t that unusual for us to go for it this time,” Richard Lukowiak said.

Lukowiak said his family decided to gamble again and put in an order for 10,000 solar eclipse safety glasses. Last week it paid off in spades.

“We’re just thankful we have a big parking lot,” he said.

Thursday afternoon before the eclipse, the line was still holding steady, moving about 100 people an hour. Only the glasses were fading.

Lukowiak said they got their last shipment of 2,000 glasses and were down to about 900 pair. At five pair a customer, their little goldmine figured to peter out before dark.

Customers patiently lined up outside the door, turned right as the line snaked along the inside wall of the building all the way to the back.

Then it crept left along on the store’s back wall until it hit the middle aisle. Then it was back toward the front to spill into two waiting cash registers.

Those who ordered online got a straight pass to the backroom to pick up a maximum of five pairs of glasses for the reasonable price of $15 each.

Nobody was complaining – not about the wait or the price. Everyone was happy to find a place that wasn’t sold out.

Lukowiak said they put a limit on the glasses so more folks would have the chance to get them.

Lilia Anteau of Johns Creek said she waited an hour – that was about the usual – and did not mind a bit.

“I’m bringing my kids to see [the eclipse]. I want them to experience something rare and privileged,’ Anteau said. “It doesn’t happen every day.”

Austin Duncan said he came over from Cumming after looking online and finding Johns Creek Ace Hardware still had eclipse glasses.

“Me and my buddies are headed for Tennessee. We’re going to camp out all weekend and then watch it Monday,” Duncan said.
