JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The incoming Rotary Club of Johns Creek, North Fulton, President Bob MacDonald, wasted no time at his July 12 installation luncheon informing club members they were not going to rest on their laurels.

Indeed, McDonald, a wealth management adviser with MacKelfresh and Associates, has a big year ahead if he wants to surpass the club’s 2016-17 accomplishments. The club was, after all, the runner-up for District 6900 Club of the Year.

That was no small feat, yet in MacDonald’s first meeting as president he challenged his fellow Rotarians to do more.

“Let’s get back in the game,” he told them. “We did great things last year, but now we need to step it up notch.”

With Rotary International’s help, the global medical community has reduced the number of new polio infections from a high 450,000 new patients annually to just five cases last year.

“We are also turning to the problem of human trafficking. Worldwide, there are an estimated 45 million people – some as young as 4 years old – caught up in that awful trade,” McDonald said.

“But we start making a difference by shining the light on child trafficking here in Johns Creek. We are going to meet with school principals, because it starts in middle school,” he said.

Rotary will work with city officials and police as well as the nonprofit organization Street Grace.

According to its website, Street Grace is one of the pioneers in the human trafficking “space” – an illegal industry that rakes in $290 million in Georgia alone.

It is an Atlanta-based, faith-driven organization collaborating with faith, business and community leaders to “provide a comprehensive path to end domestic minor sex trafficking in Metro Atlanta and throughout the United States.”

Locally, the Rotarians also participate each year in the Santa in the Summer program.

This program addresses many struggles of the working poor when their children are out of school. That means additional day care costs and additional meals when younger children are at home.

Project Summer Santa also helps families prepare children for the upcoming school year with new clothes and supplies for the new school year.

The club sponsors the Rotary Interact clubs at Johns Creek High School and Autrey Mill Middle School, where Rotarians work with students to instill leadership qualities.

Yet with all that, MacDonald challenged the club to adopt eight new projects in the coming year.

The club will participate in the Georgia Rotary Scholarship Program and host a student – this year from Brazil – while she studies in this country for a year.

“And we will continue to build partnerships with local leaders at the city, in churches and at our schools,” McDonald said.
